I have a confession. This morning, I met the day with a little music from the Flannery Brothers. Um...without my kids. Yes, this music is that good. Once you turn it on, it's just infectious. I'm literally singing along with the song Sleepyhead. My kids love it but, so do I.

The music is upbeat, uplifting, fun and definitely great for kids while still being enjoyable for parents. The first two albums from the Flannery Brothers, Love Songs for Silly Things and Move Over Lullabies...It's Time for Wake Up Songs, have been met with overwhelming success. On October 19, their third CD, The New Explorers Club hits and will no doubt become an instant fave among kids and parents alike.
The New Explorers Club invites the whole family to go exploring with songs that are perfect to dance to, sing along with and rock out to with the whole family. Songs about submarine diving, kite flying and, of course, pirates mixed in with silly songs about lying down on the kitchen floor and swallowing a bug make this disc both fun and unique.
I'm loving the new disc as well as songs from the previous two albums. Broccoli Yet from Love Songs for Silly Things is just hilarious while having an awesome tune and catchy lyrics. Knowing that the Flannery Brothers are busy at work on yet another album, Dance Songs for Silly Things, gives me hope that children's music will continue to be awesome.

With the kids back in school, Scholastic Storybook Treasury has done it again and released a new set of DVDs sure to keep them entertained with some fun and beloved stories. Scholastic's new set, Adventures in School, is a three disc library that has already won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Videos. Filled with wonderful stories like How Do Dinosaurs Go to School, The Teacher From the Black Lagoon and Miss Nelson Has a Field Day, kids of all ages are sure to fall in love with yet another set of amazing stories from Scholastic.
I remember so many of these stories as favorites when I was a child. To see them become favorites of my children is heartwarming and nostalgic. Disc one of the collectin contains stories from the popular Black Lagoon collection. My three year old daughter, who is so anxious to go to school like her big brother, absolutely loves The Teacher From the Black Lagoon. I don't blame her. I remember when the book first came out and it became an instant favorite of mine. The story Shrinking Violet shows kids what it's like to be very shy in school, something many have problems with in the beginning weeks.
Disc Two contains "Miss Nelson" stories by Harry Allard. Disguised as her alias of substitute teacher Viola Swamp, Miss Nelson teaches her kids with tough love. Like the other stories on the discs, these instantly become stories that children want to hear again and again. The third disc in the Adventures in School collection contain some classic stories that are so pertinent to what children go through when they start school. In the days before my son started Kindergarten, stories like Will I Have a Friend in School? by Miriam Cohen became vital tools in quenching the anxiety he felt. The newer story Crazy Hair Day is fun and silly and always has my kids laughing.
Every time we get a new DVD from the Scholastic Storybook Treasury, I fall in love with Scholastic all over again. The stories litter the memories of my childhood and I love that my children get to experience them in the amazing way that Scholastic formats it's DVDs. Through the wonderful stories and beautiful art, along with the technology of all that DVDs have to offer, including Spanish versions, read-a-long sections, interviews with authors and discussion questions, Scholastic proves that they are going to continue to make sure that children know and love their books for decades to come.

My daughter is potty training. It's definitely going better than it did in the beginning days of trying to potty train my son but, no potty training is a cake walk. There are so many decisions we make as parents trying to potty train our kids. Will we use pull-ups or underwear? Will we give stickers or candy? Will we have the patience to make it through?! A big choice is deciding whether or not to use the regular toilet. A lot of parents opt for the small toilets because it's just easier for a child if they don't have to climb up and perch on the larger toilet. But, the small potties come with their share of inconveniences. We opted for a step stool by the regular toilet. That also came with inconveniences. My daughter almost fell off of it on several occasions because she stepped too close to the edge and almost flipped the stool. Every time one of us non-toddlers needed to use the bathroom, the stool had to be moved aside but, then moved back for my daughter. That stool was always in the way. Then we got our Little Looster.
The Little Looster is a stool that goes in front of the toilet but, it's like no stool I've ever seen. The design of the Little Looster allows it to wrap around the front of the base of the toilet and fit snugly against it. This means that no matter which area my daughter steps on, she's not going to flip the stool. It also means that adults can use the toilet without having to move it out of the way. I love that my daughter can feel more independant when using the toilet and I don't have to worry about her safety on the stool. I adore that, as an extension of the toilet, I don't have to move the stool out of the way when I use the toilet. Here is the Little Looster at home in our bathroom.
